Common Blood Pressure Drug Causes Skin Cancer Risk

Blood pressure is one of the common medical conditions found worldwide. Management or treatment of blood pressure is unique! Treatment can be either one drug therapy or multiple drug therapy, therapy is chosen by your treating doctor based on the readings and other comorbidities one has!

Of the numerous drugs available, the common drug used for BP treatment is Hydrochlorothiazide! A study was conducted in London and researchers found a link between the drug usage and skin cancer, Melanoma! Usage of Hydrochlorothiazide is associated with 11 fold increase in the risk of skin cancer.

The theory behind this is that Hydrochlorothiazide makes your skin more sensitive and thus increases its damaging effect of UV rays on the skin. The risk of squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma were found to increase!

Thus it is a hint for the doctors to reconsider the treatment of hypertension with a different group of medicines! Do not stop the drug if you are already on! Talk to your doctor today about the drug!!
