Do you know “what is Hypotension?”

When the blood pressure reading is less than 90 millimeters of mercury (systolic) or 60 millimeters of mercury for (diastolic), it is clinically termed as “Hypotension.”

Symptoms of Hypotension

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Fainting
  • Fatigue

Causes of hypotension may include

  • Heart disease (As the heart can’t pump enough blood to keep the pressure)
  • postural hypotension (orthostatic)
  • Central nervous system disorders
  • Pregnancy
  • Medications for Hypertension
  • Dehydration
  • Blood loss & Anaemia
  • Allergy
  • Endocrine problems

Treatment of Hypotension

The goal is to bring the blood pressure back to the normal range. Treatment depends upon the cause & type of Hypotension. Few tricks can work in case of Hypotension, like

  • Drinking plenty of fluids & electrolytes
  • Standing up slowly
  • Avoiding the triggering factors like standing for a long period
  • Increasing your salt intake
  • Knowing the symptoms to avoid  emergencies

When to consult a Doctor for Hypotension?

If you face

  • You face recurring episodes of Hypotension
  • You have extreme Hypotension
  • Breathing difficulty
  • Rapid, weak pulse
  • Frequent light-headedness or cold extremities

You must consult a doctor as these are symptoms of Shock, which may be fatal.


Hypotension may indicate some underlying disease, so one should not neglect it and must consult the Doctor.
